Epimerization in an α-proton of amino acid takes place during the reaction between the S-ARCA solution and DL-amino acids within the aqueous solution due to the presence of an excess base. When hydrolysis occurs after optical conversion, D-amino acids are obtained. S-ARCA solution is reused after hydrolysis. R-ARCA can be used in the same manner to obtain L-amino acids.
